Opening Hymn
Lighting the side candles During the hymn, the couple light the two side candles, showing their desire for partnership in life, each bringing their full personality and gifts into the union.

Greeting
(Celebrant greets the people & introduces the Mass)
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God the Father, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you.
And also with you.

Confiteor:
I confess to almighty God
and to you, my brothers and sisters,
that I have sinned through my own fault,
in my thoughts and in my words,
in what I have done and what I have failed to do.
And I ask blessed Mary, ever-virgin
all the angels and saints
and you my brothers and sisters
to pray to the Lord our God for me.

Gloria
Glory to God in the Highest
And peace to his people on earth.
Lord God, heavenly king, almighty God and Father.
We worship You, we give You thanks, we praise You for your glory.
Lord God, heavenly king, almighty God and Father.
Lord Jesus Christ, only-begotten Son of God.
Lord God, Lamb of God,
You take away the sin of the world, have mercy on us.
You are seated at the right hand of the Father, receive our prayer.
For you alone are the Holy One.
You alone are the Lord.
You alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ,
With the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father.
Amen.

Opening Prayer
Heavenly Father, Creator of life and source of all love that is true and life-giving, hear our loving prayers on behalf of our friends N. and N. on their wedding day. Join and unite them faithfully in the sacrament of marriage and make their love fruitful, so that together they may bear witness to your divine love in the world. This we ask through our Lord Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you & the Holy Spirit ... Amen.

Psalm (Response: May they be happy and prosper, all their days)
O blessed are those who fear the Lord
and direct their path in his ways!
By their own hands’ labour shall they eat.
May they be happy and prosper. R./

Your wife shall be like a fruitful vine
in the heart of your house;
your children like shoots of the olive,
gathered around your table. R./

Indeed thus shall the people be blessed,
who truly fear the Lord.
May the Lord bless you from Zion,
All the days of your life. R./

The Marriage Sacrament
(All stand. The priest asks about the couple's understanding of marriage; then they make their vows and exhhange symbols of union)

Understanding of Marriage

Priest: Dear Friends, you have come here today that our Lord may seal your love in the presence of the priest and this community. Prior to celebrating this sacrament, let me first be assured of your intentions and commitment.
1) Have you come here of your free will and choice, without compulsion, to marry each other? We have.
2) Will you love and honour each other in marriage all the days of your life? We will.
3) Are you willing to accept with love the children God may send you, and bring them up in the love of Christ and his Church? We are

Priest: So I now invite you to declare before God and his church your consent to become husband and wife.
Declaration of Consent

N.: N., do you consent to be my wife? [N.: I do.]
N.: N., do you
consent to be my husband? [N.: I do].
N.: I take you as my wife,& give myself as your husband
N.: I take you as my husband, & give myself as your wife
(holding hands, they say together)
:

..to love each other truly,
for better, for worse,
for richer, for poorer,
in sickness and in health,
till death do us part.

Priest: What God joins together, man must not separate. May the Lord confirm the consent you have given & enrich you with his blessings.

Symbols of Union

1. Blessing of the Rings
Priest:
May the Lord bless these rings, which will be the outward sign of your faithful married love.

Each puts ring on partner's finger, saying:
N., please wear this ring as pledge of our love & fidelity,
in the name of the Father, & of the Son, & of the Holy Spirit
.

2. Wedding Candle
(optional)
Together, they light the middle candle,
as a sign of their new life of married partnership.
This candle we light, sign of our life of union, as a pledge of our harmony and mutual support.
(or priest may say a prayer of blessing, as they light the candle, e.g. The Sligo Blessing.)

3. Exchange of Gifts (optional)
The couple may at this point exchange gifts: e.g. a gold coin, or something significant, with the words:
This gold and silver I give thee, token of all my worldly goods.

Prayer of the Newly-Married Couple (optional; also, you can adapt this as required)
Heavenly Father, thank you for bringing us together, and prompting us to this promise of love and fidelity.
We ask your blessing on our married union, and also on all who have helped us this far in our lives - especially our families and the good friends gathered here.
Help us to grow in our love, and give us all the courage and goodwill we may need, in facing whatever life sends to us.
May we found a family of our own, if it be your holy will; and share all we have with them; and may we grow old together as true friends. … Amen.

Prayers of the Faithful
(you can adapt these, as required)

  • - that N. and N. may stay united to each other, in a happy and lasting marriage. Lord hear us.
  • - For a happy and healthy family life for N. and N.. Lord hear us.
  • - For all friends here present, young & old, married & single, that they be blessed with health and peace. Lord hear us.
  • - For all our faithful departed, who have gone before us from this life. Lord hear us.
  • - Couple may compose one or two extra prayers.

Priest:God our Father, you taught us that love is the fulfilment of the law. May our friends N. and N. whom you have called together grow in their love for each other and always remain in your love. Through Christ our Lord. AMEN.

He may add the Sligo Blessing, as follows [or this can be used as a final blessing]:

May the Lord pour his mercy upon you.
May his presence be always your guide!
May he secretly guard and uphold you.
May his grace in your spirit abide.

And may heaven's bright angels surround you,
Keep you safe, as you journey your way,
That your harvest may blossom around you,
To rejoice in the gift of each day.

May your friends find you warm in your welcome,
All the neighbours who knock on your door.
And may God keep you hale and together;
May he bless you both now and e'ermore.

    4) EUCHARISTIC LITURGY

    Offertory Procession:
Friends - or parents - bring up the bread and wine.

    Offertory Hymn
    (and prayers).

    Preparation of the Gifts
The following prayers are said while the sacrificial gifts are placed on the altar. If no song is sung, they are said aloud.
Priest: Blessed are you, Lord, God of all creation. Through your goodness we have this bread to offer, which earth has given and human hands have made. It will become for us the bread of life.
People (if said aloud): Blessed be God for ever.
Priest: Blessed are you, Lord, God of all creation. Through your goodness we have this wine to offer, fruit of the vine and work of human hands. It will become our spiritual drink.
People (if said aloud): Blessed be God for ever.
Priest: Lord God, we ask you to receive us and be pleased with the sacrifice we offer you with humble and contrite hearts. Then he washes his hands, and say inaudibly: Lord, wash away my iniquity; cleanse me from my sin.

    Call to prayer:

Priest: Pray, brethren, that our sacrifice may be acceptable to God, the almighty Father.
People: May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands, for the praise and glory of his name, for our good, and the good of all the Church.

    Prayer over the Gifts:
Heavenly Father, accept these holy gifts of bread and wine on behalf of our friends who have today joined in marriage. By your love and providence you brought them together; now bless them all the days of their married life. We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Priest: The Lord be with you.
    People: And also with you.
    Priest: Lift up your hearts.
People: We lift them up to the Lord.
Priest: Let us give thanks to the Lord, our God.
People: It is right to give him thanks and praise.

    Wedding Preface
Priest: Father, all-powerful and ever-living God, we do well always and everywhere to give you thanks.
By this sacrament your grace unites man and woman in an unbreakable bond of love and peace. You have designed the chaste love of husband and wife for the increase both of the human family and of your own family born in baptism.
    You are the loving Father of the world of nature;
You are the loving Father of the new creation of grace.
    In Christian marriage you bring together the two orders of creation;
nature's gift of children enriches the world and your grace enriches also your Church.
Through Christ the choirs of angels and all the saints praise and worship your glory.
May our voices blend with theirs as we join in their unending hymn:

    Sanctus:
ALL: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

The priest may select among various official Eucharistic Prayers, of which the most commonly used are Prayer 2 and Prayer 3. If the couple have a preference, they may suggest it to him, for inclusion in their booklet.

    Eucharistic Prayer 2.

    Priest:
Lord, you are holy indeed, the fountain of all holiness.
Let your Spirit come upon these gifts to make them holy,
so that they may become for us the body and blood of our Lord, Jesus Christ.

Before he was given up to death, a death he freely accepted,,
he took bread and gave you thanks. He broke the bread,
gave it to his disciples and said:and all creation rightly gives you praise. All life, all holiness comes from you through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, by the working of the Holy Spirit.
From age to age you gather a people to yourself, so that from east to west a perfect offering may be made to the gloy of your name. And so, Father, we bring you these gifts. We ask you to make them holy by the power of your Spirit, that they may become to body and blood of your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, at whose command we celebrate this eucharist.

On the night he was betrayed, he took bread and gave you thanks and praise. He broke the bread, gave it to his disciples, and said:
Take this, all of you, and eat it: this is my body which will be given up for you.

When supper was ended, he took the cup. Again he gave you thanks and praise, gave the cup to his disciples, and said: Take this, all of you, and drink from it:
This is the cup of my blood, the blood of the new and everlasting covenant. It will be shed for you and for all, so that sins may be forgiven. Do this in memory of me.

    Memorial Acclamation:
Priest: Let us proclaim the mystery of faith.
People: Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again.

Priest: In memory of his death and resurrection we offer you, Father, this life-giving bread, this saving cup.
We thank you for counting us worthy to stand in your presence and serve you.
May all of us who share in the body and blood of Christ be brought together in unity by the Holy Spirit.
Lord, remember your church throughout the world.
Make us grow in love, together with [N.] our pope [N.] our bishop, and all the clergy.
    Remember our brothers and sisters who have gone to their rest in the hope of rising again;
bring them and all the departed into the light of your presence.
have mercy on us all; make us worthy to share eternal life with Mary the mother of God,
with the apostles and with all the saints who have done your will throughout the ages.
May we praise you in union with them, and give you glory, through your son Jesus Christ.

Through him, with him, in him,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
all glory and honor is yours, almighty Father,
    for ever and ever.

    People: Amen.

    or Eucharistic Prayer 3.

    Priest:
Father, you are holy indeed, and all creation rightly gives you praise.

It will be shed for you and for all so that sins may be forgiven. Do this in memory of me.

    Memorial Acclamation:
Priest: Let us proclaim the mystery of faith.
People: Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again.

Priest: Father, calling to mind the death your Son endured for our salvation, his glorious resurrection and ascension into heaven,
and ready to greet him when he comes again, we offer you in thanksgiving this holy and living sacrifice.
Look with favor on your Churchs offering, and see the Victim whose death has reconciled us to yourself.
Grant that we, who are nourished by his body and blood, may be filled with his Holy Spirit, and become one body, one spirit in Christ.
May he make us an everlasting gift to you and enable us to share in the inheritance of your saints,
with Mary, the virgin Mother of God; with the apostles, the martyrs, (Saint N.) and all your saints, on whose constant intercession we rely for help.
Lord, may this sacrifice, which has made our peace with you, advance the peace and salvation of all the world.
Strengthen in faith and love your pilgrim Church on earth; your servant, Pope N., our bishop N., and all the bishops,
with the clergy and the entire people your Son has gained for you.
Father, hear the prayers of the family you have gathered here before you.
In mercy and love unite all your children wherever they may be.
Welcome into your kingdom our departed brothers and sisters, and all who have left this world in your friendship.
We hope to enjoy for ever the vision of your glory, through Christ our Lord, from whom all good things come.

Through him, with him, in him,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
all glory and honor is yours, almighty Father,
    for ever and ever.

    People: Amen.

    5) COMMUNION RITE

    The Lord's Prayer
Priest: Let us pray with confidence to the Father in the words our Savior gave us.
Priest and People: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

    The Nuptial Blessing
Let us now pray with warmest love to the eternal Father, on behalf of our newly-wedded couple (N. and N.) who, setting out on their married life, come to this holy altar to share in the body and blood of Christ our Saviour.
Heavenly Father, you created man and woman in your own image and likeness, uniting them in body, heart and mind so that they may fulfil your plan for the world. The lifelong union of man and woman offers a sign of the covenant-bond between you and your people. Their love in marriage also provides a living symbol of the love between Christ and the Church.

Bless N. & N. with gifts of kindness and fidelity. Grant that as they go through life together they may learn to share ever more fully the depth of your love. May their unity of mind and heart bear witness to your presence in their marriage.
Bless them with children, whom they may train in the spirit of true faith, so as to gain an everlasting place in your family in heaven. May they prove to be the best of parents, caring for their household according to your will.

Bless their family life: By your grace, help N. to be a loving wife and mother, faithful to her family, generous and kind. Help and inspire N. to be a good husband and devoted father, faithful to his family, strong, caring and generous.
Loving Father, as they now come with faith, to share at your table through holy Communion, so at the end may they rejoice forever with all your saints at the heavenly banquet. We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Priest: Deliver us, Lord, from every evil, and grant us peace in our day. In your mercy keep us free from sin and protect us from all anxiety as we wait in joyful hope for the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ.
People: For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever.

    Prayer for Peace:

Priest: Lord Jesus Christ, you said to your apostles: I leave you peace, my peace I give you. Look not on our sins, but on the faith of your Church, and grant us the peace and unity of your kingdom where you live for ever and ever.
    People: Amen.

    Sign of Peace:
Priest: The Peace of the Lord be with you always.
    People: And also with you.
Priest: Let us offer each other a sign of peace.
The people give each other the sign of peace.

    Breaking of the Bread

People: Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world: have mercy on us.
Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world: have mercy on us.
Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world: grant us peace.

    Prayers before Communion

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the living God, by the will of the Father and the work of the Holy Spirit your death brought life to the world. By your holy body and blood free me from all my sins and from every evil. Keep me faithful to your teaching, and never let me be parted from you.
The priest holds the host over the paten and says:
Priest: This is the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. Happy are those who are called to his supper.
People: Lord, I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word and I shall be healed.

    Receiving Holy Communion
The people proceed towards the altar to receive communion, while a hymn is sung.
The minister holds up the host before the communicant and says, The body of Christ.
The communicant responds, Amen, takes the host, and swallows it.

    Minister: The blood of Christ.
    Communicant: Amen.

    If not receiving Holy Communion
Catholics who do not wish to receive Holy Communion at the Nuptial Mass, and non-Catholics who may be present, are welcome to approach the altar for a blessing from the priest, during the Communion procession. As they approach the priest, they should hold their arms folded across the chest, as a sign that what they seek is a blessing, rather than the Sacrament.

    Prayer after Communion

Father, may the Sacrifice we have offered and the Eucharist we have shared bring your grace, to strengthen the love of N. and N., and assure your fatherly help to all of us. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

    Concluding Rite

    P. The Lord be with you
    All: And also with you

    P. May God the Eternal Father keep you steadfast in your love.
    All: Amen.

    P. May you bear witness to the love of God amid the burdens of this life, so as tobe welcomed to the eternal life of heaven.
    All: Amen.

    P. May the peace of God be always in your home. May the angel of God protect you, and may the Holy Family of Nazareth be your model and inspiration.
    All: Amen.

    P. And may almighty God, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, bless you now and forever.
    All: Amen.

    .
    1) From the Book of Genesis 1:26-28, 31
(Male and female, He made them)

Then God said, “Let us make humankind in our image, according to our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the wild animals of the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth.”

So God created humankind in his image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.  God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it; and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the air and over every living thing that moves upon the earth.” God saw everything that he had made, and indeed, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.

    .
    2) From the Book of Genesis 2:18-24
(And the two become one flesh)

Then the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper as his partner.”  So out of the ground the Lord God formed every animal of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to the man to see what he would call them; and whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name.  The man gave names to all cattle, and to the birds of the air, and to every animal of the field; but for the man there was not found a helper as his partner.

So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and he slept; then he took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh.  And the rib that the Lord God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man.  Then the man said, “This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; this one shall be called Woman, for out of Man this one was taken.”  Therefore a man leaves his father and his mother and clings to his wife, and they become one flesh.

    3 ) From the Book of Genesis 24:48-51, 58-67

Then I bowed my head and worshiped the Lord, and blessed the Lord, the God of my master Abraham, who had led me by the right way to obtain the daughter of my master’s kinsman for his son.  Now then, if you will deal loyally and truly with my master, tell me; and if not, tell me, so that I may turn either to the right hand or to the left.”

Then Laban and Bethuel answered, “The thing comes from the Lord; we cannot speak to you anything bad or good.  Look, Rebekah is before you, take her and go, and let her be the wife of your master’s son, as the Lord has spoken.”  And they called Rebekah, and said to her, “Will you go with this man?” She said, “I will.”

So they sent away their sister Rebekah and her nurse along with Abraham’s servant and his men.  And they blessed Rebekah and said to her, “May you, our sister, become thousands of myriads; may your offspring gain possession of the gates of their foes.”  Then Rebekah and her maids rose up, mounted the camels, and followed the man; thus the servant took Rebekah, and went his way.
Now Isaac had come from Beer-lahai-roi, and was settled in the Negeb.  Isaac went out in the evening to walk in the field; and looking up, he saw camels coming.  And Rebekah looked up, and when she saw Isaac, she slipped quickly from the camel,  and said to the servant, “Who is the man over there, walking in the field to meet us?” The servant said, “It is my master.” So she took her veil and covered herself.  And the servant told Isaac all the things that he had done.  Then Isaac brought her into his mother Sarah’s tent. He took Rebekah, and she became his wife; and he loved her. So Isaac was comforted after his mother’s death.

    4) From the Book of Tobit 7:6-9,12-14
( “I entrust her to you as your wife.")

Raguel leapt to his feet and kissed him and wept.  Then, finding words, he said, “Blessings on you, child! You are the son of a noble father. How sad it is that someone so bright and full of good deeds should have gone blind!” He fell on the neck of his kinsman Tobias and wept.  And his wife Edna wept for him, and so did his daughter Sarah.  Raguel killed a ram from the flock, and they gave them a warm welcome. They washed and bathed and sat down to table.  Raguel called for his daughter Sarah, took her by the hand and gave her to Tobias with these words, “I entrust her to you; the law and the ruling recorded in the Book of Moses assign her to you as your wife. Take her; bring her home safe and sound to your father’s house. The God of heaven grant you a good journey in peace.”  Then he turned to her mother and asked her to fetch him writing paper. He drew up the marriage contract, and so he gave his daughter as bride to Tobias according to the ordinance of the Law of Moses. After this they began to eat and drink.

    5) From the Book of Tobit 8:4-8
(Together they said, “Amen, Amen,”  and lay down for the night)

The parents meanwhile had gone out and shut the door behind them.  Tobias rose from the bed, and said to Sarah, “Get up, my sister!  You and I must pray and petition our Lord to win his grace and his protection.”  She stood up, and they began praying for protection, and this was how he began:

You are blessed, O God of our fathers; blessed too is your name for ever and ever.
Let the heavens bless you and all things you have made for evermore.
    You it was who created Adam, you who created Eve his wife to be his help and support;
and from these two the human race was born.
You it was who said, ‘It is not right that the man should be alone; let us make him a helper like him.”
And so I take my sister not for any lustful motive, but I do it in singleness of heart.
Be kind enough to have pity on her and on me and bring us to old age together.
And together they said, “Amen, Amen,”  and lay down for the night.

    6) From the Book of Tobit 8:13-21
    (Grant them mercy and protection)

In the morning the maid opened the door and went in. She found the two fast asleep together;  and she came out again and whispered, “all is well.”  Then Raguel blessed the God of heaven with these words: You are blessed, my God, with every blessing that is pure; may you be blessed for evermore! You are blessed for having made me glad. What I feared has not happened, instead you have shown us your boundless mercy. You are blessed for taking pity on this only son, this only daughter.

Grant them, Master, your mercy and your protection; let them live out their lives in happiness and in mercy. He called Tobias and said, “I will not hear of your leaving here for a fortnight. You are to stay where you are, eating and drinking, with me. You will make my daughter happy again after all her troubles.  After that, take away a half of all I have, and take her safe and sound back to your father. When my wife and I are dead you shall have the other half.

    7) From the Song of Songs 2:6-14
("Arise, my love, my fair one, and come away")

"O that his left hand were under my head, and that his right hand embraced me!  I adjure you, O daughters of Jerusalem, by the gazelles or the wild does: do not stir up or awaken love until it is ready!  The voice of my beloved! Look, he comes, leaping upon the mountains, bounding over the hills.  My beloved is like a gazelle or a young stag. Look, there he stands behind our wall, gazing in at the windows, looking through the lattice."

My beloved speaks and says to me: "Arise, my love, my fair one, and come away;  for now the winter is past, the rain is over an gone.  The flowers appear on the earth; the time of singing has come, and the voice of the turtledove is heard in our land.  The fig tree puts forth its figs, and the vines are in blossom; they give forth fragrance. Arise, my love, my fair one, and come away."
He says: "O my dove, in the clefts of the rock, in the covert of the cliff, let me see your face, let me hear your voice; for your voice is sweet, and your face is lovely."

    8) From the Book of Sirach 26:1-4, 13-16
(A good wife in her well-ordered home)

Happy is the husband of a good wife; the number of his days will be doubled. A loyal wife brings joy to her husband, and he will complete his years in peace. A good wife is a great blessing; she will be granted among the blessings of the man who fears the Lord. Whether rich or poor, his heart is content, and at all times his face is cheerful.

A wife’s charm delights her husband, and her skill puts flesh on his bones. A silent wife is a gift from the Lord, and nothing is so precious as her self-discipline. A modest wife adds charm to charm, and no scales can weigh the value of her chastity. Like the sun rising in the heights of the Lord, so is the beauty of a good wife in her well-ordered home. Like the shining lamp on the holy lampstand, so is a beautiful face on a stately figure. Like golden pillars on silver bases, so are shapely legs and steadfast feet.

    9) From the Book of Jeremiah 31:31-34
(I will be their God, and they shall be my people)

The days are surely coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah.  It will not be like the covenant that I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt—a covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, says the Lord.

But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.  No longer shall they teach one another, or say to each other, “Know the Lord,” for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, says the Lord; for I will forgive their iniquity, and remember their sin no more.

    10) From the Book of Proverbs 31:10-13, 19-20, 30-31
(A woman who is to be praised)

A capable wife who can find? She is far more precious than jewels.  The heart of her husband trusts in her, and he will have no lack of gain.  She does him good, and not harm, all the days of her life.  She seeks wool and flax, and works with willig hands.  She is like the ships of the merchant, she brings her food from far away.  She rises while it is still night and provides food for her household and tasks for her servant girls.  She considers a field and buys it; with the fruit of her hands she plants a vineyard.  She girds herself with strength, and makes her arms strong.  She perceives that her merchandise is profitable. Her lamp does not go out at night.  She puts her hands to the distaff, and her hands hold the spindle.  She opens her hand to the poor, and reaches out her hands to the needy.

She is not afraid for her household when it snows, for all her household are clothed in crimson.  She makes herself coverings; her clothing is fine linen and purple.  Her husband is known in the city gates, taking his seat among the elders of the land.  She makes linen garments and sells them; she supplies the merchant with sashes.  Strength and dignity are her clothing, and she laughs a the time to come.  She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue.  She looks well to the ways of her household, and does not eat the bread of idleness.

Her children rise up and call her happy; her husband too, and he praises her:  "Many women have done excellently, but you surpass them all.”  Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.  Give her a share in the fruit of her hands, and let her works praise her in the city gates.

    11) From the Book of Ecclesiastes 4:7-11
    (Better together than alone)

Again, I saw vanity under the sun: it is the case for solitary individuals, without children or kindred; yet there is no end to all their toil, and their eyes are never satisfied with riches. “For whom am I toiling," they ask, “and depriving myself of pleasure?" This also is vanity and chasing the wind.

Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil. For if they fall, one will lift up the other; but woe to one who is alone and falls and does not have another to help.

Again, if two shall sleep together, they keep each other warm; but how can one keep warm alone? And though one might prevail against another, two will prevail against one.

    1)   From the Letter to the Romans 8:31-35, 37-39
(If God is for us, who is against us?)

What then are we to say about these things? If God is for us, who is against us?  He who did not withhold his own Son, but gave him up for all of us, will he not with him also give us everything else?  Who will bring any charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies.  Who is to condemn? It is Christ Jesus, who died, yes, who was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who indeed intercedes for us.

Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will hardship, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?  No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.  For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers,  nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

    2) From the Letter to the Romans 12:1-2, 9-18
(Love each other with mutual affection)

I appeal to you therefore, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.  Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds, so that you may discern what is the will of God—what is good and acceptable and perfect.

Let love be genuine; hate what is evil, hold fast to what is good;  love one another with mutual affection; outdo one another in showing honor.  Do not lag in zeal, be ardent in spirit, serve the Lord.  Rejoice in hope, be patient in suffering, persevere in prayer.  Contribute to the needs of the saints; extend hospitality to strangers.  Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them.  Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep.  Live in harmony with one another; do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly; do not claim to be wiser than you are.  Do not repay anyone evil for evil, but take thought for what is noble in the sight of all.  If it is possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.

    .
    3) From the Letter to the Romans 15:1-3a, 5-7, 13
(May the God of hope fill you with all joy)

We who are strong ought to put up with the failings of the weak, and not to please ourselves. Each of us must please our neighbor for the good purpose of building up the neighbor.  For Christ did not live just to please himself...

May the God of steadfastness and encouragement grant you to live in harmony with one another, in accordance with Christ Jesus,  so that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Welcome one another, therefore, just as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God.  May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

    4) From the First Letter to the Corinthians 6:13-15, 17-20
(Your bodies are members of Christ)

“Food is meant for the stomach and the stomach for food”—and God will destroy both one and the other. The body is not meant for immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body.  And God raised the Lord and will also raise us up by his power.  Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I therefore take the members of Christ and make them members of a prostitute? Never!  But he who is united to the Lord becomes one spirit with him.  Shun immorality. Every other sin which a man commits is outside the body; but the immoral man sins against his own body.  Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, which you have from God? You are not your own;  you were bought with aprice. So glorify God in your body.

    5) From the First Letter to the Corinthians 12:31—13:8
     (Love is patient and kind)

But earnestly desire the higher gifts. And I will show you a still more excellent way...

Love is patient and kind; love is not jealous or boastful;  it is not arrogant or rude. Love does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful;  it does not hold on to what was wrong, but holds on to what was right.  Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

Love never ends; as for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away. For our knowledge is imperfect and our prophecy is imperfect; but when the perfect comes, the imperfect will be swept away.

    6) From the Letter to the Ephesians 4:1-6
(A life worthy of your calling)

I therefore, the prisoner in the Lord, beg you to lead a life worthy of the calling to which you have been called,  with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love,  making every effort to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope of your calling, one Lord, one faith, one baptism,  one God and Father of all, who is above all and through all and in all.

    .
    7) From the Letter to the Ephesians 5:21-29
(Serve each another in love for Christ)

Be subject to one another out of reverence for Christ.  Wives, be subject to your husbands as you are to the Lord.  For the husband is the head of the wife just as Christ is the head of the church, the body of which he is the Savior.

Just as the church is subject to Christ, so also wives ought to be, in everything, to their husbands.  Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her,  in order to make her holy by cleansing her with the washing of water by the word,  so as to present the church to himself in splendor, without a spot or wrinkle or anything of the kind—yes, so that she may be holy and without blemish.  In the same way, husbands should love their wives as they do their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself.  For no one ever hates his own body, but he nourishes and tenderly cares for it, just as Christ does for the church.

    8) From the Letter to the Philippians 4:4-9
      (Rejoice in the Lord always)
    (I
f there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things)

Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice.  Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is near.
Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.  And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Finally, beloved, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is pleasing, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.
Keep on doing the things that you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, and the God of peace will be with you.

    .
    9) From the Letter to the Colossians 3:12-17
(The peace of Christ rule in your hearts)

As God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience.
Bear with one another and, if anyone has a complaint against another, forgive each other; just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive.  Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.  And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in the one body. And be thankful.

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; teach and admonish one another in all wisdom; and with gratitude in your hearts sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to God.  And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

    .
    10) From the First Letter St. Peter 3:1-9
    (The purity of your lives)

Wives, in the same way, accept the authority of your husbands, so that, even if some of them do not obey the word, they may be won over without a word by their wives’ conduct,  when they see the purity and reverence of your lives.
Do not adorn yourselves outwardly by braiding your hair, and by wearing gold ornaments or fine clothing;  rather, let your adornment be the inner self with the lasting beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in God’s sight.
It was in this way long ago that the holy women who hoped in God used to adorn themselves by accepting the authority of their husbands.  Thus Sarah obeyed Abraham and called him Lord. You have become her daughters as long as you do what is good ad never let fears alarm you.

Husbands, in the same way, show consideration for your wives in your life together, paying honor to the woman as the weaker sex, since they too are also heirs of the gracious gift of life—so that nothing may hinder your prayers.
Finally, all of you, have unity of spirit, sympathy, love for one another, a tender heart, and a humble mind.  Do not repay evil for evil or abuse for abuse; but, on the contrary, repay with a blessing. It is for this that you were called—that you might inherit a blessing.

    .
    11) From the First Letter St. John 4:7-12

(If we love one another, God lives in us)

Beloved, let us love one another, because love is from God; everyone who loves is born of God and knows God.
Whoever does not love does not know God, for God is love.  God’s love was revealed among us in this way: God sent his only Son into the world so that we might live through him.

In this is love, not that we loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins.  Beloved, since God loved us so much, we also ought to love one another.  No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God lives in us, and his love is perfected in us.

    .
    12) From the Letter to the Hebrews 13:1-4a, 5-6
(“The Lord's my helper; I'll not fear”)

Let mutual love continue.  Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing that some have entertained angels without knowing it.  Remember those who are in prison, as though you were in prison with them; those who are being tortured, as though you yourselves were being tortured.

Let marriage be held in honor by all, and let the marriage bed be kept undefiled; for God will judge fornicators and adulterers.
Keep your lives free from the love of money, and be content with what you have; for he has said, “I will never leave you or forsake you.”  So we can say with confidence, “The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid.

(Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy)

When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down, his disciples came to him.  Then he began to speak, and taught them, saying:

Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.

    2) From the Gospel of St. Matthew 5:13-16
(Let your light shine before others)

“You are the salt of the earth; but if salt has lost its taste, how can its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything, but is thrown out and trampled under foot.  "You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hid.  No one after lighting a lamp puts it under the bushel basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all in the house.  In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.

    3) From the Gospel of St. Matthew 7:21, 24-29
(Those who do the will of my Father in heaven)

“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father in heaven.  On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many deeds of power in your name?’  Then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; go away from me, you evildoers.’

"Everyone then who hears these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on rock.  The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on rock.  And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not act on them will be like a foolish man who built his house on sand.  The rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell—and great was its fall!”  Now when Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were astounded at his teaching,  for he taught them as one having authority, and not as their scribes.

    4) From the Gospel of St. Matthew 19:3-6
(God made them male and female)

Some Pharisees came to him, and to test him they asked, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any cause?”  He answered, “Have you not read that the one who made them at the beginning ‘made them male and female,’  and said, ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’?  So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.”

    5) From the Gospel of St. Matthew 22:34-40
(You shall love your neighbor as yourself)

When the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together,  and one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question to test him.  "Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?”

He said to him, “’You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’  This is the greatest and first commandment.  And a second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’  On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.”

    (What God has joined together)

Some Pharisees came, and to test him they asked, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?”

He answered them, “What did Moses command you?”  They said, “Moses allowed a man to write a certificate of dismissal and to divorce her.”  But Jesus said to them, “Because of your hardness of heart he wrote this commandment for you.  But from the beginning of creation, ‘God made them male and female.’  ’For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife,  and the two shall become one flesh.’ So they are no longer two, but one flesh.  Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.”

(A wedding in Cana of Galilee)

On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there.  Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding.  When the wine gave out, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.”  And Jesus said to her, “Woman, what concern is that to you and to me? My hour has not yet come.”

His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”  Now standing there were six stone water jars for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons.  Jesus said to them, “Fill the jars with water.” And they filled them up to the brim.  He said to them, “Now draw some out, and take it to the chief steward.” So they took it.

When the steward tasted the water that had become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), the steward called the bridegroom  and said to him, “Everyone serves the good wine first, and then the inferior wine after the guests have become drunk. But you have kept the good wine until now.”

Jesus did this, the first of his signs, in Cana of Galilee, and revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.

    8) From the Gospel of St. John 15:9-12
(That your joy may be complete)

    Jesus said to his disciples:

"As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you; abide in my love.  If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love.

I have said these things to you so that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be complete. This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you."

    9) From the Gospel of St. John 15:12-16
(Love one another as I have loved you)

    Jesus said to his disciples:

“This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.  No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.  You are my friends if you do what I command you.  I do not call you servants any longer, because the servant does not know what the master is doing; but I have called you friends, because I have made known to you everything that I have heard from my Father.  You did not choose me but I chose you. And I appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will last, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask him in my name.

    10) From the Gospel of St. John 17:20-26
(That they may all be one)

    Jesus prayed:

“I ask not only on behalf of these, but also on behalf of those who will believe in me through their word,  that they may all be one. As you, Father, are in me and I am in you, may they also be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me.  The glory that you have given me I have given them, so that they may be one, as we are one,  I in them and you in me, that they may become completely one, so that the world may know that you have sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.

Father, I desire that those also, whom you have given me, may be with me where I am, to see my glory, which you have given me because you loved me before the foundation of the world.  "Righteous Father, the world does not know you, but I know you; and these know that you have sent me  I made your name known to them, and I will make it known, so that the love with which you have loved me may be in them, and I in them.”
